- Almost There...
-
Here are some updated pics of our kitchen. The cabinets are in (obviously) but still need some tweaking and finish work. The tile was installed today -- grout comes tomorrow. Those little white things on the tile are spacers.

- The Worst Is Over
-
The last two weeks have been rather intense with lots of pounding and drilling and dirt, but we're over the hump now. The walls were painted yesterday, including the other side of the bathroom where the door was, so we have a nice, clean bathroom again instead of stepping on crunchy things all the time. All of the plumbing at the washer/dryer is now inside the wall (I used to be able to watch the water drain from the washer into the pipe). Today, the crew started opening the cabinet boxes, hauling in the cabinets and putting on the doors. It's a long process so they only set some inside today, and they are not permanently installed yet. But it is fun to see the real cabinets. I like the paint color against them, which is a relief. Tomorrow is a no-work day but Thursday and Friday they will finish the cabinet installation. Next week is flooring. We're almost there! (Which is good, because if I have to eat one more hot dog off a paper plate, I might scream!)
Here is the look on the sink side of the kitchen. The dishwasher will go between the first two cabinets.

- If These Walls Could Talk
-
Yesterday, one of the guys in our remodeling crew told me about a time he found beer cans and a decomposed salami sandwich in a kitchen wall he demoed. That got me thinking: wonder what could be in our walls?
Of course, it would be shocking to find something as vile as a beer can anywhere in our house (!). Instead, the crew magically uncovered today a like-new half-pint milk bottle. Since our house was built in 1937, I figure some guy 71 years ago had milk with his lunch and either accidentally or purposefully stuck the bottle in the wall before he closed it up.

- Day Two: And There Was Light
-
OK, I know there really was light on Day One in Genesis. But it happened on Day Two in the Casa Scannell kitchen when our remodeling crew broke through a small return wall, opening up our kitchen and letting in a lot more light. Here is what it looked like with the wall in place:

And here is how it looks from the same spot with that right wall demolished all the way to the ceiling:
